Profiles of Grant Recipients

National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF)
Funds from Weatherby Foundation International have been used for NSSF-produced videotapes, teacher’s manuals and classroom educational materials distributed each year in thousands of public and private schools throughout the United States. These videos include “The Un-endangered Species,” “Wildlife for Tomorrow” and “What They Say About Hunting.” As a direct result of the support given by the Foundation, the NSSF has been able to reach millions of students with a positive message about ethical sport hunting and wildlife conservation.

Safari Club International (SCI) American Wilderness Leadership School
This school, established by SCI, has been in existence for many years, with the purpose of educating young people.

National 4-H Shooting Sports Program
This is one of the largest youth shooting sports programs in the country, reaching 200,000 kids annually.

Boy Scouts of America (BSA)
Through a special matching funds program, the Weatherby Foundation has made it possible for BSA Councils and troops around the country to construct or improve camp rifle and shotgun ranges, and to support shooting merit badge programs.

Wyoming Hunting & Fishing Exposition
Started in 1998, this program was developed by the Wyoming Game & Fish Department. This free event provides an opportunity for everyone—particularly young people, the handicapped and women—to be introduced to the myriad of outdoor skill areas associated with hunting, shooting and fishing. The program wants to send the message that hunting, shooting and fishing are important to America’s culture, heritage and wildlands, and are healthy lifelong activities. In 1999, about 13,000 people attended.

Texas Wildlife Expo
Started in 1992, this event is sponsored by Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Parks and Wildlife Foundation of Texas, Inc. Free to the public, Texas Wildlife Expo offers activities such as shooting sports, fishing, kayaking, camping demonstrations, mountain biking and rock climbing. In 1999, more than 44,000 people attended. Texas Wildlife Expo provides opportunities for education and involvement to ensure that today’s natural world is passed on to future generations.
